About us

Makukhanye Art Room, meaning “Let There Be Light,” is a vibrant Shack Theatre located in Khayelitsha, the second-largest township in South Africa. Established in 2007, its origins can be traced back to the Makukhanye Entertainment Group, formed by community members, including Siphosethu Ruqu and Thando Mpengisi, along with passionate young artists from the area.

Recognizing the lack of rehearsal and performance spaces in Khayelitsha, these pioneers took the initiative to transform a neglected dumping site into a creative haven. They rolled up their sleeves, cleaned the area, and turned it into a rehearsal space that would foster local talent and celebrate the performing arts.
